In the how many more terrible things can happen to him category, 12-time world handbike champion, 4-time Paralympic gold medalist, former dominator of CART, and all around inspirational guy Alex Zanardi is in serious but stable condition after an accident with a truck during a handbike race in Italy.
He had to have 3 hours of brain surgery and his neurological state won’t be known until he wakes up. Everyone is hoping for the best, but it’s apparently a very marginal thing right now.
No word on the condition of the truck, but I assume it was totaled by Zanardi’s awesomeness.

Good to know! The BBC article didn’t have the specifics of what happened. I was just surprised to not see it on Jalopnik.
